Saint Wulfstan
Born in Long Itchington in 1008, Wulfstan joined a Benedictine monastery and was ordained at Worcester in 1038. He was made bishop of that city in 1062.
After winning the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror replaced every English bishop with one of his own appointments, apart from Wulfstan, who refused to surrender his crozier. He said he would only give it up to the one who gave it to him. Going to the tomb of Edward the Confessor, in Westminster Abbey, he struck it with this crozier, where it stuck. As no one was able to remove it, he was allowed to remain as bishop of Worcester. He was great social reformer and was well loved and respected. The projects he initiated included the rebuilding of Worcester Cathedral. Wulfstan died in 1095 and his feast day is celebrated on 19th January.
An ecumenical service was held at Long Itchington in 2008 to celebrate Saint Wulstan millennium
