In the tranquil setting of a long, valley, St Peter & St. Paul, Long Compton is surrounded by pastoral scenery. Eight hundred years of care and construction has created a remarkable fusion of ancient and modern. Approaching the church through the thatched lych gate - originally part of a row of small cottages - the path is flanked by large balls of yew. In the porch is a recumbent stone female figure, wearing an ornate headdress.
Who is she and why is she there? Information suggests that she dates from the 15th century and you can just make out a small dog resting at her feet. Was this effigy was the cover of a tomb? , and originally located in the north aisle. But her identity remains a mystery.
