St Paul's, Warwick

Friars St
Warwick
CV34 6HA

The population of Warwick grew rapidly in the early 1800s when the new canal enabled many new industries to develop. As the population grew, the churchyards of St Mary and St Nicholas became full and in 1823 both churches petitioned for extra burial space.

In 1824, ground was consecrated in Friars Street and a cemetery chapel was built, used exclusively for burials. The current building was built in 1842, incorporating this chapel, which became the south transept.

Some of the lovely stained glass windows were created by Jane Gray of Shrewsbury, who later assisted Lawrence Lee, the chief designer of the Coventry Cathedral nave windows. These include representations of local features: the racecourse, Warwick Castle, the Market Hall and St John’s House. The church has an unusual square bell turret with a pyramid-shaped roof.
