St Michael's, Weston under Wetherley
Weston under Wetherley
CV33 9BY
St Michael's is a lovely red sandstone church in a peaceful setting on a high bank at the edge of the village. The impressive tower is 14th century.
Two ancient brass inscriptions are set on the south wall of the chancel, close to the altar - one to Joyce Tomer, a locally known physic, who died in 1566. The church also has a memorial to Laurence Saunders of Weston Hall, who was a Protestant Martyr burned at the stake in Coventry in 1555 for continuing to hold Protestant views after Catholicism had been restored under Mary Tudor.
Along with several war memorials there is an interesting original wooden war grave marker brought over from the Somme by the family of a young man who died in the Great War after the establishment of the Commonwealth War Graves. St Michael's is very close to well marked footpaths and is well worth a visit.
