In 1872 the chapel, previously on this site, was demolished and replaced by the present church, designed by Gothic Revival architect Ewan Christian.

A recent restoration programme necessitated by the near collapse of the tower, was completed early in 2011. This has meant that the bells can once again being rung, after many years of silence.
