Long Itchington was the birthplace of Bishop Wulfstan, the Saxon Bishop, born before William the Conqueror arrived in England. The spire of the church is no more, having been struck by lightening during a service in1762 but the remains can be seen from a distance.
Inside the church is large and lofty and the area around the altar is especially interesting. A piscina, where the priest would have rinsed the chalice and paton used at the Mass, is set into the wall and the chancel wall has a sedilla (carved seat) where the priests sat. The mediaeval rood screen is the oldest complete screen in the Midlands.
See if you can find the animal carved into the chancel arch and the grotesque figures staring down from the tops of the pillars.
The Grand Union Canal run very close to the village.
