St Lawrence, Barton on the Heath, Gloucestershire
Barton Road,
Barton on the Heath,
Gloucestershire
GL56 0PJ
This sleepy village, where four counties meet, has a rich history and connections with Robert Dover, who started the Cotswold Games. He is buried here as is the mother of William Wilberforce. Medieval stained glass close to the altar and the mysterious carving of a leaping animal behind the chancel arch are real treasures. The unusual tower is known as a saddleback and was built in the 1100s.
Barton is one of the South Warwickshire Seven Churches all featured on this website and linked together by a cycle and walking route.
