St Laurence, Shotteswell

Shotteswell
OX17 1HS

The original building at Shotteswell was a small monk's cell with a tiny window, probably built by the Benedictine Priory at nearby Warmington. This ancient area is preserved in the vestry.

In the eleventh century it was extended on the west side, but remained very small. The last major alterations and extensions date from the fourteenth century and the quirky, stone heads at the base of the arches date from this period.

St Laurence has remained essentially unchanged for the past 500 years and its interior retains a wonderful sense of peace and sanctity, from a thousand years of worship inside its lovely honey coloured stone walls.
