Holy Trinity, Stratford
Old Town
Stratford
CV37 6BG
This lively place, known as Shakespeare’s church, was here 300 years before he was born and is a notable building in it’s own right despite its lofty association! The church, not to be confused with the Guild Chapel in the town centre, is accessible from the gardens running along the riverside and is situated in the Old Town area of Stratford. The spire, added in 1763, soars above this grand building. It is full of rich carving and ornate stained glass from across the centuries depicting an assortment of historic figures from poets to explorers. The Clopton Chapel is in honour of a wealthy local benefactor who became Lord Mayor of London. Shakespeare’s grave is close to the altar along with other members of his family. He looks down on visitors from high up in the wall, quill in hand. There is a small fee of £1.50 to visit Shakespeare’s grave in the Chancel but there is no charge to see the rest of this exceptional church. The river can be enjoyed from the churchyard to the rear of church.
