St Peter, Wormleighton
Wormleighton
CV47 2XH
This hidden church has origins dating from the 12th century and many of its original features exist and remain unchanged. St. Peters sits at the heart of this tiny hamlet surrounded by beautiful countryside. This village and its estate is owned by the Spencer family of Althorp in Northamptonshire and it is also the place where George Washington's ancestors were married.
The screen - a Reformation survivor, dating from the early 1600s and once situated in Southam church - features intricately carved flowers interspersed with some cherubic faces, some sticking their tongues out! There is also what is thought to be the earlist carved depiction of a bespectacled man on the left hand side of the screen.
