All Saints, Burton Dassett
Burton Dassett Country Park
Burton Dassett
The power of place that this building exudes is remarkable. The spare interior is cloister-like and its setting among the Dassett Hills country park is second to none. As the church itself is built into the hillside, the climb from tower end to altar is considerable. The wall paintings illustrate the changing face of Christian liturgy over the centuries. The once obliterated images have been restored and can now be seen more clearly. The stone altar in the Lady Chapel was once smuggled away in anticipation of the Reformation and buried for safekeeping. The pillars feature some interesting carving, among them a green man and several strange beasts chasing each other around the stonework. There is an interesting display telling the story of this church-in-the-hills and explaining how community life has changed over the centuries.
