St James the Great, Snitterfield
Church Road
Snitterfield
An impressive church with even more impressive connections. The Warwickshire poet, Richard Jago, was once an incumbent here and a member of the ‘Warwickshire Coterie’. William Shakespeare’s grandfather, Richard, was a churchwarden in this place, and his Uncle Henry was excommunicated from the church in 1581 for non-payment of his tithes! The 14th century font, once sited just inside the door, has carvings of different heads around the outside and is now found in the body of the church close to a deep recess in the wall called an aumbrey which still has its hinges intact. It would have stored precious vessels and relics before the Reformation. The building of the tower was twice halted in the 1300s due to the outbreak of Black Death.
